Reading Comprehension

29/5/2014

Reading is one of the four language skills. It is a receptive skill, like listening which means it involves responding to text, rather than producing it. There are ways of reading ,one of them is reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension is the ability to read texts, process it and understand its meaning. The ability to comprehend a text is influenced by their traits and skills, one of which is the ability to make inferences. If a word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words. Reading comprehension involves two levels of processing, shallow processing and deep processing. Deep processing involves semantic processing, which happens when we get the meaning of a word and relate it to similar words. Shallow processing involves structural phonemic recognition, the processing of  a sentence and a word structure and their associated sounds.
