How do we teach phonology?

Pronunciation is a very important part in any language, just like grammar and vocabulary. In some ways pronunciation is operating all the time in the language activities. We do not teach pronunciation as a physical  activity. Instead we teach it in two main non-physical ways:

1- Cognitive description and discussion (the way we talk about grammar and vocabulary) which in the case of pronunciation is like teaching someone to dance by talking about it

2-Repetition, which is like teaching someone to dance by telling them to watch me and do it.

Both have their place, but neither is based on the experience of the teacher, feeling kinesthetic insight into what their own muscles and tissues are actually doing when they speak, which would enable them to develop strategies to help their learners do the same. Unless learners are helped to renew their conscious kinesthetic contact with muscles to make pronunciation difference.

PHONOLOGY
DIGITAL TOOLS (1)
The websites which care about phonology are important and useful for the learners. These websites let the learner to repeat what they hear many times. This method of learning depends on the self-learning of the learners. So, they will be able to pronounce correctly.
There are many websites which take care of pronunciation lessons such as:

In my opinion, this websites are very helpful to any learner who wants to get the exact pronunciation which that means that is very significant to let's all the learners in the world to use the internet to learn. In addition, using websites is not costing any money. Therefore, it is a free learning and everyone can use it for free.
Nowadays, everyone needs to learn fast by technology materials. then, they want something without losing their time to find the person who will pronounce correctly and clearly. That is what makes the digital tools has an importance inside the education environment.

Learner English

Do Arabic students have different  problems with pronunciation than other people from other countries ?
yes they do, Arabic people have different  problems between each other, they have differences in region accent pronunciation and global accent pronunciation, for example in Egypt people cant pronounce 'th' as English people do, some others examples for Egypt the letter /g/ - /d3/ we have as Arabs one area which is pronounced as /g/ . Also one of the common differences is the consonant clusters because the range of it is much wider in English than it is in Arabic, initial two-segment cluster not occurring in Arabic include: pr, pl, gr, gl, thr, thw and sp, for example perice for price , sipring for spring and so on .
Learner English, by Bernard Smith .I agree totally with the author, he mention all the style of most Arabic country in the world, there are some points you can find a huge different between Arab and other nationality how learn English, also he described how some words are pronounce between the different regions .
For my classmates I recommend who is going to teach group of students from different Arabic counties to read the book and figure how they are different from each other, some nationality need special language even in Arabic, upon all these differences there are some grammar rules apply for the Arabic Language, such as verb to be,word order, pronouns and some others grammar rules. at the end of the chapter the author put some example of Arabic texts and the translation in English .

LEARNER ENGLISH

MOHAMMED ALGORIB

_________________________________________________________________________________

This book is completely useful and needed. In my opinion, it is one of the best books in Phonetics. It has a fruitful, easy, and simplified, which attracts the reader for more reading and practising. As long as, it is Phonetics book, so it needs some practice on how the words are pronounced correctly.

As for the Arabic students, I personally do agree, that they are facing some difficulties in pronunciation especially with sounds, such as, /v/, /f/, /g/, /p/, /b/,/sh/, /ch/ and /j/. Also, it is really noticed, that words, like, (bark) and (park), (bar) and (car).

In case of agreement with the author, the book was read briefly. The author is somehow reasonable, and convinced through the book. He has classified the book into very small, easy-going, simplified, and tasteful language, so the reader could easily understand the context nicely. But, there are many things are not strangely covered in the text book. Personally, the books belongs to the beginners of the science of the Phonetics.

Many classmates ought to have a look on this chapter for many important reasons. Firstly, the chapter is widely interesting and attractive. Secondly, we are in need of the Phonetics, so they should revise it openly. Thirdly, we are Arabic teachers, and we should practise the pronunciation with the local British teachers, as long as, we are in the United Kingdom currently. So, it is highly recommended for my classmates to see the chapter.

Pronunciation activities are very important for us, because it is really important to practise very much. It is really important to do exercises at classes.

In Phonetic sounds, it is actually helpful, but as it is mentioned up here, it is only for the starters in that needed science.

Well, the website was seen, and it complete all the ideas of the book in general, and I should look at it again.

REGARDS,
MOHAMMED ALGORIB

Mohannad Alhumaidi - Arabic speakers problems

Arabic and English phonological systems are totally different in everything sounds, emphasis placed, vowels, consonant and expressing meanings and that goes with writing system as well. All these differences will affect Arabic speakers when they talk in English.
When native Arabic speakers learn English they go through many problems like distinguishing between (p) and (b), and that will lead us to talk about the influence of the first language (mother tongue), and because the sound (P) is not in the Arabic sound system many Arab learners will find it difficult to focus when they talk. The problem is that simple mistake in pronouncing the sound (P) will lead to big problem in understanding, for instance the word (Park) when it pronounced with (B) sound it will completely change the meaning of the word.
As a result, teachers have to do extra work with their Arabic students to help them get over some of the pronunciation problems by giving them more oral tasks to make them speak more and to correct them when they pronounce the word wrong. Encouraging them to concentrate more while they talk and teach them to never be shy when they talk, all that will build a self-confidence which will help and motivate them to produce the sounds correctly.
