Error Correction

Error Correction

18/6/2014

Correctness is one aspect of good effective writing. Nonetheless, avoiding errors  is an important aspect.

The two websites describe focus on the errors in English; how to recognize those errors and how to correct them in ways that suit the abilities of the students. I highly recommend those two websites to be good resources for all English teachers.

Lesson Planning

Lesson Planning

4/6/2014

  Before we teach, we should decide what  goals or  aims of the lesson are. Aims depend on the level of the learners, their needs, their interest, their motivation and the number of the students. The language aims focus on vocabulary, function and grammar and the subsidiary aims are skills that the learners practise which the teacher does not specifically concentrating on. There must some activities which require the learners to listen, speak, read and write. The teacher should consider two types of questions which are open questions and closed questions. In addition to that, he must know who is he going to ask. The lesson must be linked to the previous lesson and the next lesson.

Units 19 and 20 Reflection

Units 19 and 20 Reflection

4/6/2014

      Unit 19:

   It is about  preparing a lesson  by selecting main aims ,subsidiary aims and personal aims. The main aims describe the most important  thing we want the learner to learn. The subsidiary aims describe the skills that the learners must be able to use well in order to achieve the main aim. The personal aims describe the skills that help the teacher to achieve the main aims and the subsidiary aims. In addition to that, there are stage aims which describe the particular purpose of each stage of a lesson.

     Unit20:

    It is about different components which are involved in each lesson plan ,such as class profile, timetable, main aim, subsidiary aim, stage aim, personal aim, assumptions, anticipated problems, possible solutions, teaching aids, timing, interaction patterns and homework. Some lesson plans may not include all of these components but they should include some of them.

Mock Test Reflection

Mock Test Reflection

3/6/2014

   Even though the questions in the mock test were reasonable, I did not do well in the test.I was a hundred percent convinced that the test would cover all the chapters but unfortunately, I did not study the last four chapters which caused me a problem.

  Frankly, all the chapters were quite simple except the approaches units which I did not study.I would say that I have to study as much as I can and ask the teachers about the parts that I have problems with in order to score a high score.

Phonology

phonology

21/5/2014

How do we teach phonology?

Pronunciation is a very important part in any language, just like grammar and vocabulary. In some ways pronunciation is operating all the time in the language activities. We do not teach pronunciation as a physical  activity. Instead we teach it in two main non-physical ways:

1- Cognitive description and discussion (the way we talk about grammar and vocabulary) which in the case of pronunciation is like teaching someone to dance by talking about it

2-Repetition, which is like teaching someone to dance by telling them to watch me and do it.

Both have their place, but neither is based on the experience of the teacher, feeling kinesthetic insight into what their own muscles and tissues are actually doing when they speak, which would enable them to develop strategies to help their learners do the same. Unless learners are helped to renew their conscious kinesthetic contact with muscles to make pronunciation difference.

motivational strategies in the language classroom

Motivational Strategies in the Language Classroom

Abdullah AL Fahdi

19/5/2014

       This book is one of the most interesting books on motivation.It is the first of its kind in the second/foreign language field that is entirely devoted to discussing motivational strategies, that is,methods and techniques to generate and maintain the motivation of the learners.Although a great deal has been written in the past about what motivation is,describing its components and dimensions and how these influence learning , very little has been said about how this theoretical knowledge can be applied in the actual classroom. If classroom practitioners are thinking (justifiably) that researchers have generally left them to their own devices by not saying too much practically relevant about the topic, this book is intended to offer some remedy to that situation.This is a practical book with only a limited theoretical discussion.

Sound Foundations

Sound Foundations

Learning and Teaching Pronunciation

19/5/2014

        This book will help learners to understand what they need to know about pronunciation in order to teach it with enjoyment and confidence.The approach to learning is:
experiential-the learners will learn by experiencing the subject matter personally;
physically-pronunciation is physical activity;
insightful-the key is awareness rather than repetition;
quick-the learners will be delighted by what they can learn in a short time;
humanistic-it engages the curiosity of the learners;
lasing-after guided self-discovery,the learner will not forget it.
There are 88 discovery activities to experience directly how speech sounds are produced and clear descriptions.Moreover,there are 74 classroom activities offering an insight-based approach for students.

English Vocabulary

English Vocabulary in Use

(pre-intermediate and intermediate)

15/05/2014

           English Vocabulary in Use for pre-intermediate and intermediate is one of the greatest books that I have ever read.The book helps the learner to learn more than 2,000 words and phrases,and he can use it without a teacher.There are 100 units in the book. The learner can study them in any order,but the first four units have information about vocabulary that will help him with his learning.After doing the exercises,the learner can check his answers in the answer key at the back of the book..The Index at the back of the book has all new words and phrases from the unites, with a phonemic transcription to help the learner with pronunciation. If there is the edition with the CD-ROM,there will be a chance to listen to the pronunciation of all the new vocabulary,and there are more practice exercise as well.Ultimately,I recommend this book to pre-intermediate and intermediate students and I hope they enjoy it.
