Do Arabic students have different problems with pronunciation than other people from other countries ?yes they do, Arabic people have different problems between each other, they have differences in region accent pronunciation and global accent pronunciation, for example in Egypt people cant pronounce 'th' as English people do, some others examples for Egypt the letter /g/ - /d3/ we have as Arabs one area which is pronounced as /g/ . Also one of the common differences is the consonant clusters because the range of it is much wider in English than it is in Arabic, initial two-segment cluster not occurring in Arabic include: pr, pl, gr, gl, thr, thw and sp, for example perice for price , sipring for spring and so on .
Learner English, by Bernard Smith .I agree totally with the author, he mention all the style of most Arabic country in the world, there are some points you can find a huge different between Arab and other nationality how learn English, also he described how some words are pronounce between the different regions .
For my classmates I recommend who is going to teach group of students from different Arabic counties to read the book and figure how they are different from each other, some nationality need special language even in Arabic, upon all these differences there are some grammar rules apply for the Arabic Language, such as verb to be,word order, pronouns and some others grammar rules. at the end of the chapter the author put some example of Arabic texts and the translation in English .
Great list of examples! What do you think that you can do in the language classroom to help your military learners improve in this area?
ReplyDeleteI like the topic you chose. do you agree that Saudi English teachers should read such books to be aware of the common mistakes that Arabic learners face and try to help them to overcome such problems.
